Update 05/04/2011: This process has also been tested and works on Windows 2003 R2 x64!
Currently trying to get Quest MessageStats 6.8 installed onto a Windows 2008 R2 server. The catch is we are currently using Exchange 2003, and I hadn’t seen anything that would allow Exchange System Manager 2003 on a W2K8R2 server. So, I like a challenge…..
Disclaimer: I’m doing this on a server that is expendable, in a test lab. I’m not responsible if you destroy your production environment by following the instructions below.
Here is the process
- Install the W2K8R2 RSAT ADDS tools and II6 compatibility. This will require a reboot, which is forced by the installation of the ADDS tools.
- Download and install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1. Download from here
- Download and install: Exchange System Manager for Windows Vista found here.Now this can be a bit tricky, as the ESM for Vista does an OS detection and stops you from installing it. Luckily, there is a way around it. Extract the .msi file from the download, open a command prompt as Administrator, change to the location of the .msi file and execute the following:
msiexec /i esmvista.msi /q
This will install ESM for Vista silently, without the OS check.
- Copy all DLL´s file from C:\Progam Files(x86)\exchsrvr\bin to your \windows\syswow64\ Don’t overwrite any files that already exist!
- Copy the \windows\system32\ntlsapi.dll from your Exchange Server to your \windows\syswow64\
- Then execute as in a command prompt as Administrator:regsvr32 c:\windows\syswow64\cdoexm.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\syswow64\exadmin.dll - Run Exchange System Manager and you’re away!

I am using your technique to try and install ESM on WIN2008 64-bit. I’m getting the following error.
Acess Denied
Facility: Win32
ID no: c0070005
Microsoft Active Directory-Exchange Extension.
Any ideas how to proceed? Thanks for being Awesome!

Nope. Doesn’t work. Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 won’t install if Outlook is present. On to the next solution elsewhere….

Hi George,
From what I`ve seen and attempted, unfortunately not. The way I worked around it was to have a Win 2003 admin server with ADUC and ESM2003. I`ve now migrated to Exchange 2010 SP1, although there are still a couple of Ex2003 mailboxes to be migrated before we can remove Ex2003 from our infrastructure completely.

Thank you for the response. In my case I publish all the IT tools up on Citrix for everyone in IT to use and I’ve been migrating everything over to XenApp6 that only runs on W2K8R2 so this means that I have to leave the Citrix Presentaion Server 4.x environment up until we get off Exchange 2003 because we heavily rely on this for onboarding/offboarding user accounts. I know this is really, really old but…
Use C:\Windows\System32\dsa.msc /32 to run the 32-bit version of ADUC which will have the Exchange 2003 tabs and tasks.

I figured out a way… Start Run MMC /32 Enter Add the Snap in for ADUC I guess it only works in 32bit Mode. Good luck!!

Hi,
thanks it worked great but my problem is that if i go to ADUC then i am not able to see exchange tasks. if i type mmc /32 and add ADUC snapp-in then it works but when i save that console and close and reopen then again i cant see exchange tasks. i should always open mmc with /32 switch and add ADUC snapp-in. i dont want like this.i always want to open with /32 switch. how can i do it ?

If i start mmc /32 then i got this error message.
I can see Exchange System but can’t start it.

Having problems with step 3 – extracting the msi file…. I used the msiexec /i esmvista.msi /q at the prompt where the .exe resides – what am i doing wrong….

Im able to install ADUC with the Exchange pains, but when Im creating a new user the page where I can create an Exchange mailbox everything is grayed out. (I can click next). I have tried with a domain admin user and a user that have Exchange View-Only Administrator. I have not installed Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 because I have installed Outlook. What can be wrong?

Starting with Outlook 2007 the CDO is no longer installed. You need to download it separately from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=1004 and install it.
